Ragamuffin

Ragamuffin

This page introduces the 'Ragamuffin' cat. As a relatively new cat breed, you might not see it often at home. The first impression is that of a fluffy, soft-looking cat, which is significantly related to the Ragdoll. Would you like to sneak a peek into the secrets of the Ragamuffin and its connection to the Ragdoll?

Ragamuffin Basic Infomation

Country of origin: United States

Weight: Males: 4–7 kg, Females: 4–6 kg

The Ragamuffin is related to the Ragdoll, said to be its ancestor. The background of the Ragamuffin's creation involved complex circumstances between breeders. It all started in the 1960s. A Persian breeder named Baker created a Ragdoll with seal points. Subsequently, Baker decided to impose strict controls on the Ragdoll, setting several rules for those wishing to breed. These included managing breeding through an organization founded by Baker and not allowing the breed name to be used without permission. The arrangement was similar to a franchise agreement, where a percentage of the price of each kitten was paid to the organization. Due to dissatisfaction with this business model, some breeders left and formed a new enthusiast group, beginning crossbreeding based on the Ragdoll in the 1980s. The cats used for this were primarily long-haired breeds such as Persian, Himalayan, and Burmese. As a result of continued improvements, cats with a wider variety of colors than the Ragdoll began appearing, and in 2003, the 'Ragamuffin' was officially registered as a new breed with the CFA.

Ragamuffin Q&A

Ragamuffin
What is the origin of the Ragamuffin's name?

Interestingly, the name 'Ragamuffin' was given somewhat playfully by the breed enthusiasts and means 'urchin' or 'person wearing tattered clothes.' Once registered, changing the name became impossible, and the breed was permanently known as the Ragamuffin.

Ragamuffin
What are the color variations of the Ragamuffin?

Ragamuffins come in a wide array of colors including black, white, chocolate, red, blue, fawn, cinnamon, lilac, and cream. They feature several patterns: solid color, tabby, silver & golden, smoke & shaded, parti-color, calico & bicolor, tabby & white. Eye colors include sapphire blue, blue, aqua, green, hazel, gold, yellow, orange, copper, and odd-eyed. Ragamuffins are exclusively a long-haired breed.

Ragamuffin
What does a Ragamuffin look like?

The Ragamuffin has a round, wedge-shaped head with large, walnut-like eyes, slightly tufted ears, and a body type known as long and substantial. Despite their large, muscular build, they have a soft, fluffy coat that feels like silk. Their variety of colors adds to their charm, allowing for a diverse range of hues.

Ragamuffin
How much does it cost to buy a Ragamuffin?

Purchasing a Ragamuffin from breeders or catteries typically costs around 250,000 yen. It's advisable to visit and see the kittens in person if you find one you like. While pet shops might offer these cats for between 100,000 to 300,000 yen, potentially cheaper than some breeders, caution is advised as some shops may breed indiscriminately. Buying from a cattery, especially one accredited by cat breeding associations like CFA or TICA, often carries a premium due to the breeder's higher reliability and the added pedigree value.

Ragamuffin
Is it true that Ragamuffins require a lot of grooming?

Yes, it's true. Like other long-haired breeds, Ragamuffins are particularly prone to matting. Regular grooming, including brushing at least once a week and periodic shampooing, is essential. It's beneficial to accustom kittens to grooming early on, making it easier to manage as they grow.

Ragamuffin
I want to know more about the personality and traits of the Ragamuffin!

Ragamuffins are friendly and may approach people outside their family, but they particularly adore being near their owners. They are affectionate and enjoy attention but aren't overly jealous, making them suitable for families with children or other pets. While Ragamuffins are calm, they still enjoy playing. Intelligent enough to play on their own, they prefer interacting with their owners. As they mature, they tend to become less agile, but it's important to keep them active to prevent obesity and other health issues.

Ragamuffin
What common diseases are Ragamuffins prone to?

Ragamuffins may be susceptible to conditions such as hairballs, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and polycystic kidney disease. Frequent grooming can help manage hairballs, while regular veterinary check-ups are essential for early detection and management of heart and kidney conditions.

Ragamuffin
What is the lifespan of a Ragamuffin?

Ragamuffins generally live for about 10 to 13 years. This is slightly shorter than the average lifespan for cats, which is around 12 to 16 years.
