Would you like to explore the world of rabbits, also known as Amefaji, and discover their secrets?

American Fuzzy Lop Basic Infomation

Country of origin America.

Senior / female More than 6 months and less than 1.81 kg Ideal body weight 1.70 kg.

Junior / male, female Less than 6 months less than 1.59 kg Minimum weight 0.79 kg. ※American Rabbit Breeders Association(ARBA)standards.

The American Fuzzy Lop is a rabbit that was born during the process of increasing the color variations of the Holland Lop.

Originally, there were only solid-colored Holland Lops, so English Spot x Holland Lop crossbreeding was carried out to increase their variety.

As a result, a broken-colored rabbit was born, but a problem arose where the hair quality pattern called “rollback,” which is a characteristic of Holland Lops, changed to “flyback.”

To improve this hair quality, French Angora was used for crossbreeding, and as a result, long-haired rabbits with rollback hair quality were born frequently.

This rabbit was called Fuzzy Holland to distinguish it from Holland Lops. A certain breeder was fascinated by this appearance and began breeding Fuzzy Lops to establish them as a breed.

It was then renamed the American Fuzzy Lop and officially registered as a breed with the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) in 1988.

What does an American Fuzzy Lop look like?

The American Fuzzy Lop has a wide and round head with distinctive ears that are thick and droop straight down from the top of the head.

The texture of their fur, which is fluffy like cotton, is surprisingly rough to the touch. The fur grows evenly, but a length of 5 cm or more is ideal.

American Fuzzy Lop
What is the difference between American Fuzzy Lop and Fuzzy Holland?

These two breeds look very similar, but there are some differences when compared.

①Mating roots. ・The Fuzzy Holland is a long-haired breed that was born from a mutation of the Holland Lop. ・The American Fuzzy Lop is a breed that was established by fixed crossbreeding of Fuzzy Hollands born from mutations.

②Differences in hair quality. ・The hair quality of the Fuzzy Holland is soft and straight. ・The hair quality of the American Fuzzy Lop looks fluffy, but it is surprisingly rough.

Some people distinguish between these breeds, while others lump them together with Holland Lops. If you have the opportunity to see them, please compare them.

American Fuzzy Lop
How much does it take to buy American Fuzzy Lop?

When keeping animals, it is necessary to follow the laws established by each country. This time, we will talk about keeping American Fuzzy Lops at home in Japan. It costs about 30,000 to 70,000 yen. The distribution of American Fuzzy Lops is low, so the price is slightly higher than other rabbits.

Also, rabbits that have the potential to win at rabbit shows are called “show types,” while rabbits that are suitable for keeping at home are called “pet types.” However, if you want to purchase a show type American Fuzzy Lop, it may be a little more expensive.

American Fuzzy Lop
I want to know more about the personality of the American Fuzzy Lop!

They are gentle, curious, and active, but they can be shy around people they meet for the first time.

They tend to be affectionate and clingy to their owners, and are relatively easy to keep as pets.

Males generally have a strong territorial awareness, while females are said to be more aggressive. However, there are individual differences in personality, so it is best to remember this as a reference only.

American Fuzzy Lop
What are the diseases that American Fuzzy Lop is susceptible to?

American Fuzzy Lops are prone to “Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome (RGIS),” “otitis media,” and “malocclusion.”

This disease used to be called “hairball disease.” Rabbits sometimes accidentally swallow loose hair while grooming themselves. If the swallowed hair comes out with feces, there is no problem, but if a large amount of hair clogs the digestive tract, it can cause loss of appetite or inability to defecate.

At that time, it was called hairball disease because the cause was thought to be loose hair. However, recent research has shown that clogging of the digestive tract is not caused by loose hair alone, so it is now called Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome for easy understanding.

Since this disease is said to affect almost all rabbits, prevention methods include feeding them fiber-rich timothy hay, exercising them, providing them with plenty of water to prevent dehydration, and brushing them moderately.

American Fuzzy Lops with droopy ears are prone to moisture buildup in their ear canals, and since they are also easy to breed, frequent care is essential.

If you notice symptoms such as itchy ears or pus, it is desirable to take them to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Ear diseases may not seem to directly affect life, but if they worsen, they can invade the nervous system and lead to a disease called torticollis, where the head tilts.

Since torticollis can lead to the need for nursing care, if you feel any discomfort, please visit an animal hospital without hesitation.

Also, if you are not confident about how to care for their ears, veterinarians may teach you how to clean them. It might be a good idea to consult them once.

Rabbit teeth grow throughout their lives, so they can usually prevent excessive growth by eating fiber-rich food and chewing on wood. However, if their teeth are not properly ground down for some reason, their bite may become misaligned.

If their teeth are in poor condition, they may lose their appetite or develop diseases such as nasolacrimal duct stenosis. Therefore, if you have any concerns about their teeth or eating habits, it is recommended that you consult an animal hospital.

American Fuzzy Lop
What is the lifespan of an American Fuzzy Lop?

American Fuzzy Lops have a lifespan of about 7-8 years, which is about the same as the average lifespan of rabbits.
