Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzer

With bushy eyebrows and a magnificent mustache, the Miniature Schnauzer might remind you of a cute little old man. In this introduction, we'll explore the distinct appearance and secrets hidden behind this breed, which was famously featured in the drama 'Marumo's Rule', known for the Marumo Dance.

Miniature Schnauzer Basic Infomation

Country of Origin: Germany

Height: 30-36 cm

Weight: 5-9 kg

The Miniature Schnauzer is one of three types of Schnauzer, the others being the Giant Schnauzer and Standard Schnauzer. The medium-sized Standard Schnauzer primarily served as a utility dog on farms, performing tasks like guiding livestock and pulling small carts. It also served as a messenger dog for the German army due to its intelligence, loyalty, and ability.

While the Standard Schnauzer was perfect as a working dog, farmers wished for a smaller dog capable of exterminating pests like rats.

To achieve this, breeders crossed the Standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher, creating the Miniature Schnauzer.

The breed eventually made its way to America, where further crossbreeding refined the Miniature Schnauzer closer to its current form.

The Miniature Schnauzer gained explosive popularity in the United States, becoming beloved by celebrities and Hollywood stars. Bruce Lee, born in Hong Kong, was among those who favored the Miniature Schnauzer.

Miniature Schnauzers were introduced to Japan post-war. Initially, they weren't very popular due to the lack of advanced dog grooming techniques at the time. However, as more people began keeping dogs as pets, the Miniature Schnauzer's popularity grew significantly. Today, it consistently ranks among the top dog breeds in Japan.
