Eastern Gorilla Q&A

Eastern Gorilla
What kind of gorilla is the eastern gorilla?

The eastern gorilla is the largest species of gorilla. They are a distinct species from western gorillas, inhabiting the mountainous and forested regions of Central Africa.

There are two subspecies of eastern gorillas. One is the mountain gorilla, which lives in high-altitude mountainous regions and has a long coat to protect it from the cold. The other is the eastern lowland gorilla, which inhabits lowland forests and has a shorter coat than the mountain gorilla.

Eastern Gorilla
What do eastern gorillas eat?

Eastern gorillas are primarily herbivores, feeding on leaves, shoots, fruits, and bark. They consume about 18 kilograms of plants per day!

Mountain gorillas primarily feed on fibrous plants found at high altitudes. Eastern lowland gorillas, on the other hand, have a more varied diet, consuming a wider variety of plants found in lowland areas. They occasionally eat insects and small animals.

Eastern Gorilla
What kind of lives do they lead?

Eastern gorillas live in groups of 5 to 30 individuals. These groups consist of one mature male (silverback), several females, and their offspring.

The silverback, as the leader of the group, protects the group from other male gorillas, finds food, and decides where the group will travel. They are active during the day and build nests in safe locations to sleep at night. They make their nests on the ground, using grasses and leaves as bedding.

Eastern Gorilla
[Quiz!] What is the role of the silverback in an eastern gorilla group?

The silverback is the leader of the group, keeping the group together and protecting them from other male gorillas. They are called "silverbacks" because the hair on their backs turns silver as they mature.

Silverbacks are very strong and will sometimes fight to the death to protect their group. They are also intelligent and exhibit excellent leadership skills in managing the group.

Eastern Gorilla
[Quiz!] How long do mountain gorilla infants stay with their mothers?

Mountain gorilla infants stay with their mothers until they are 3 to 4 years old. During this time, they learn various things from their mothers.

For example, they learn how to find food, protect themselves from dangerous animals, and communicate with other gorillas. Mothers cherish and carefully raise their infants.

Eastern Gorilla
[Quiz!] Why are eastern gorillas endangered?

Eastern gorilla populations are declining due to poaching, habitat destruction, and disease. Eastern lowland gorillas, in particular, have been severely affected by civil war and deforestation, with their numbers declining by about 70% over the past 20 years.

To protect eastern gorillas, it is essential to strengthen anti-poaching efforts, protect forests, and manage their health to prevent the spread of diseases.
