Genetta

Genetta

The Genetta is a small, short-legged cat with strikingly wild patterns reminiscent of a leopard (though occasionally, long-legged Genettas can also be found). Their mesmerizing, beautiful eyes are another popular charm of the Genetta. As a new breed that was only established in 2006, the Genetta is expected to gain more popularity in the future. This time, we introduce the Genetta, a small cat with exotic fur and beautiful eyes.

History of the Genetta

The Genetta was created by breeders in October 2006, inspired by an enthusiast's desire to create a cat breed resembling the rare African Genet. (The African Genet is a small carnivorous mammal in the Viverridae family) However, African Genets were not actually used in the breeding process. Instead, breeds with similar physical characteristics, such as Munchkins, Bengals, and Oriental Shorthairs, were used. As a result, many Genettas have relatively short legs. Although different from Genets, Genettas are highly agile and love to play, despite their small size. In Japan, the number of Genetta cats kept as pets is relatively low compared to other breeds.

Personality of the Genetta

Genettas are very curious and love activities like playing with balls. Despite their small size and short legs, they have strong jumping abilities, so a cat tower can provide great fun for them. They prefer being active rather than staying calm at home. Due to their inquisitive nature, they tend to get along well with other dogs and cats. They are generally easygoing but also enjoy being close to their owners when they want to relax. They have a gentle and friendly side, making them relatively affectionate cats. On the other hand, they can be a bit cautious and sensitive, so it's best to interact with them while maintaining an appropriate distance.

Genetta Q&A

Genetta
What is the origin of the name 'Genetta'?

The name comes from the African Genet, a carnivorous animal. Like the Genet, the Genetta has active and wild characteristics.

Genetta
Why does the Genetta live there?

The Genetta originated in the USA, but the exact reason why it was developed there is unknown. It is likely because the enthusiasts and breeders who wanted to create the Genetta lived in the USA.

Genetta
What does the Genetta eat?

Commercial cat food is fine. Since Genettas are active and have high energy levels, cat food that emphasizes joint care is recommended. Due to their short legs, Genettas are prone to back strain, so it is important to manage their diet to prevent obesity.

Genetta
How can you welcome a Genetta into your family?

The Genetta is a relatively new breed, and there is less detailed information available compared to other cat breeds. Therefore, it is advisable to get a Genetta from a specialized breeder who can provide various advice. The average price for welcoming a Genetta is around 200,000 to 400,000 yen.

Genetta
Is the Genetta a purebred cat?

It is not recognized as a purebred cat, but it is a rare cat registered with 'REFR' due to its high rarity value worldwide.

Genetta
How can you distinguish between a Genetta and a Munchkin?

The Genetta is a short-haired breed, while the Munchkin can be either short-haired or long-haired. Munchkins tend to have relatively longer fur. Remembering that 'short-haired is the Genetta, fluffy is the Munchkin' might make it easier to distinguish between them.

Genetta
How can you distinguish between a Genetta and a Bengal?

The Genetta and Bengal have similar fur patterns and charming eyes. Bengals have longer legs and tend to be more muscular. Remembering that 'the one with long legs is the Bengal' can help in distinguishing between them.

Genetta
How should you handle the Genetta's shampooing and brushing?

As a short-haired breed, brushing at least once a week and shampooing once a month is sufficient. However, from spring to autumn, when they tend to shed more, increasing the frequency of brushing is recommended if you notice more shedding. For brushing, a rubber brush that reduces the risk of skin injury is recommended.

Genetta
What illnesses should you be aware of with the Genetta?

As the Genetta is a relatively new breed, specific illnesses they are prone to are not yet well-known. However, due to their short limbs and high activity level, it is necessary to be cautious of joint and spinal diseases such as intervertebral disc herniation. Using non-slip flooring or placing rugs in areas where the Genetta frequently moves can help prevent joint diseases.
