Scottish Fold
Scottish Fold is a breed of cat that has been dominating the rankings of cats people want to live with in recent years! They are famous for their cute round faces and folded ears. However, Scottish Folds are not only cute but also have various difficult aspects. If you see them next time, I would be happy if you could observe them with reference to this page!
Scottish Fold Basic Infomation
Country of origin Scotland (United Kingdom).
Length 60cm.
Weight male : 3-6kg female : 3-5kg.
It is said that the origin of Scottish Fold cats is a white female cat with folded ears discovered in the Scottish region of the UK.
The cat with a strange appearance was named “Susie” and was kept at the home of the discoverer, William Ross.
After discovering that Susie’s offspring also inherited the gene for folded ears through breeding, Ross registered with GCCF (UK Cat Breed Registration Organization) and began breeding in earnest.
Although GCCF initially cooperated in breeding folded ear cats, it later created a rule to stop actively breeding this cat due to the discovery of many skeletal and hearing abnormalities.
Susie’s descendants then went to America, where breeding of folded ear cats that had been discontinued in the UK resumed.
By crossbreeding with British Shorthair and American Shorthair in the 1970s, they succeeded in preserving the individuality of folded ear cats while minimizing the effects of genetic disorders of skeletal and hearing genes.
In 1977, folded ear cats were officially registered as Scottish Folds by CFA (American Cat Fanciers Association).
The name comes from “Scottish (Scotland) + Fold (fold)”.
Scottish Fold Q&A
What is the origin of the Scottish Fold's name?
By adding the two words “Scottish” (Scotland) and “Fold” (fold), which are the two words that represent the country of origin, it became known as “Scottish Fold”.
What are the colour variants of the Scottish Fold?
There are blue, black, cream, white, chocolate, red and cinnamon.
・Solid color. The entire body, including the face, body, legs and tail, is monochromatic.
・Tabby. There is a striped or spotted pattern throughout.
・Silver & Golden. Only the tips of the hair are colored, and the root is white or pale.
・Smoked & shaded. The tip of the overcoat is colored and the remaining 1/2 is white.
・Party colors. There are two coat colors randomly.
・Calico & bicolor. 1/2 or 1/3 of the body is white, and the rest is composed of two or more coat colors.
・Tabby & White. 1/2 or 1/3 of the body is white and the rest is composed of stripes and spots.
Available in Blue, Sapphire Blue, Yellow, Aqua, Orange, Gold, Green, Copper, Hazel and Odd-Eye.
Scottish Folds come in both short-haired and long-haired varieties.
Basically, the gene for short hair is dominant in Scottish Folds, so short-haired kittens are often born. Therefore, long-haired Scottish Folds are considered rare.
Furthermore, if it is a long-haired x folded ear cat, it becomes even more rare and valuable.
What does the Scottish Fold look like?
The head is round and the body type is called semi-cobby. The large, round eyes and small ear tips are rounded and bent forward.
The legs are short in proportion to the body size and have a muscular physique. The coat is smooth and covered with dense, thick fur.
Actually, Scottish Folds are not only folded ears but also cats with standing ears like ordinary cats.
Why are Scottish Fold ears crooked?
Because it is said that the ears were bent due to a mutation, the exact reason is not clear.
Scottish Folds have not only folded ears but also cats with standing ears like ordinary cats.
There are also types of folded ears: single-fold with loose folds, double-fold with the ear tips attached to the face, and triple-fold with the strongest fold.
How long does it take to buy a Scottish Fold?
If you buy from a breeder or cattery, it will cost around 100,000 yen. The advantage is that you can check what kind of environment it has grown up in and what kind of cat its parents are.
Also, depending on the personality of the breeder, the reliability may change, so it is desirable to make a reservation and visit after that.
In the case of a pet shop, the price ranges from 10 to 20 million yen, but in some cases, you can slightly reduce the price compared to buying from a breeder. However, some shops may breed cats recklessly, so it may be better to avoid purchasing from shops where the breeding source is unclear.
Scottish Folds have more conditions that affect their price than other cats.
・Broken ears are 100,000~200,000 yen. ・50,000~100,000 yen for standing ears.
Other conditions are:
・Being a kitten. ・Excellent pedigree. ・Be a long-haired breed. ・Have unusual colors and patterns. (Especially male calico cats are very rare).
There are other conditions as well, but mainly if it fits the above conditions, the price tends to be high. There was even a Scottish Fold that was priced at several million yen.
Also, there may be cases where they are looking for adoptive parents for adult Scottish Folds. The price is often several tens of thousands of yen as a cost for hospitalization, so if you don’t care about kittens, why not consider it as one of your candidates?
Learn more about the character and characteristics of the Scottish Fold!
Scottish Folds are generally friendly, but they are also considered to be easy to keep for beginners because they have a calm and quiet side.
They also have a clingy side. Therefore, if they are left alone for a long time or have a lot of time when they cannot play, they tend to accumulate stress.
Males tend to be more clingy. They also have an aggressive side. On the other hand, females have an atmosphere like “cool beauty”. However, there are times when they want to be spoiled by their owners, so it seems good to let them cling moderately if Scottish Folds come closer to their owners.
Although this applies to other breeds as well, there are individual differences in personality. Some males are quiet. It’s good to remember that this is basically how it is.
Even if you live with other cats, they are said to be easy to get along with because they have a gentle personality. They are also smart and will learn how to eat and use the toilet properly.
You may have heard that the personality changes depending on whether the ears are folded or standing. However, there seems to be no significant difference in personality between the two. There are cases where a cat with folded ears changes to standing ears while being raised, but the personality remains the same.
What are the diseases that Scottish Fold is susceptible to?
Scottish Fold, which is characterized by ears that fold inward, is said to be prone to ear diseases. In addition, since they are often born with a gene that causes insufficient growth of cartilage, I will also introduce diseases that these cats are prone to.
Otitis externa is a disease in which inflammation occurs in the part called the external auditory canal, causing severe itching and pain.
Since the ears of Scottish Fold are folded inward, they have poor ventilation compared to other cats. Therefore, earwax and other substances tend to accumulate, which can cause otitis externa.
Otitis externa can be prevented by regularly cleaning the ears. However, if you clean your ears too much by trial and error, you may end up hurting your ears instead. So be careful.
If you are not sure how to do it properly or are worried about whether you are doing it correctly, it may be a good idea to go to a hospital and have them teach you how to clean your ears.
Have you ever heard of the term “Scottish sitting,” which refers to a sitting posture where an uncle is relaxing?
It is often misunderstood as just a cute way of sitting from a human perspective, but if you find a cat sitting in this way, it may be sitting like that to relieve wrist and joint pain.
Scottish Fold cats may develop “chronic inflammation,” “degenerative joint disease,” and “osteochondrodysplasia” in their joints from around 6 months of age due to genetics.
Of course, not all cats develop these diseases, but there is currently no way to completely prevent the onset of this disease. This disease is particularly common in Scottish Fold cats, which is why this sitting posture is called Scottish sitting.
If your cat sits in this way, it may be a good idea to have it examined at a hospital or create an environment that is less stressful on its hands and feet, such as laying non-slip mats on the flooring.
It is said that it is difficult to completely cure this disease, but there is a possibility that early detection can slow down the progression of symptoms and result in a stress-free life for cats.
What is the lifespan of a Scottish Fold?
The lifespan of Scottish Fold is said to be 10-13 years. This is slightly shorter than the average lifespan of other cats, which is 12-16 years.
However, if you are aware of what diseases they are prone to and take care of them, there is a good chance that they will live longer.
