Japanese Crested Ibis

The Japanese Crested Ibis (Scientific name: Nipponia nippon) is a bird species classified under the order Pelecaniformes, family Threskiornithidae, and genus Nipponia. Previously on the brink of extinction, its population has recovered thanks to conservation efforts by Japan and China. This beautiful bird, with a body length of about 75cm and a wingspan of about 140cm, is known for its bare face and legs, red-tipped beak, and pale peach-colored feathers, which are also referred to as 'Ibis color'. In Japan, it is particularly well-known in Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, and is protected from a 'wild extinction' status under the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
