Eastern Lowland Gorilla Q&A
What kind of gorilla is the eastern lowland gorilla?
The eastern lowland gorilla is a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, inhabiting the lowland rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are the largest subspecies of gorilla, with a very robust physique.
They have black faces and flat noses. Their fur is black, and mature males develop silver-gray hair on their backs, hence the name "silverback." They are generally gentle in nature, but when they feel threatened, they will beat their chests, roar, and charge to intimidate.
What do eastern lowland gorillas eat?
Eastern lowland gorillas mainly feed on fruits, leaves, bark, and herbaceous plants. They eat a lot of fruit when it is abundant, but when fruit is scarce, they consume more bark and plant fibers.
They eat about 20 kg of plants a day, so they spend a lot of time eating. They also eat soil, which is thought to be a way to supplement their mineral intake.
What kind of lives do they lead?
Eastern lowland gorillas live in groups of 10 to 30 individuals. A group typically consists of one silverback, several females, and their offspring. The silverback, as the leader of the group, protects the group from other male gorillas, finds food, and decides where the group will travel.
They are active during the day and build nests on the ground to rest at night. The nests are made of leaves and branches. Eastern lowland gorillas are intelligent and have complex social structures. They communicate with each other using a variety of sounds and gestures and cooperate to survive.
[Quiz!] How long do baby eastern lowland gorillas stay with their mothers?
Eastern lowland gorilla infants stay with their mothers for about 3 to 4 years. The mother provides milk, cares for the infant, and protects it from danger.
The mother also teaches the infant the rules of society and how to find food. Infant gorillas learn a lot from their mothers and grow up to be adults.
[Quiz!] Why are eastern lowland gorillas endangered?
Eastern lowland gorillas are endangered for a number of reasons. First, poaching. Their meat, fur, and bones are illegally traded.
Second, habitat destruction. The forests they live in are being cut down for timber and agriculture. Third, civil war. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been in civil war for many years, making it difficult to protect gorillas.
The civil war has also led to increased poverty, which has in turn led to an increase in gorilla poaching.
