Size

They measure 85 to 105 cm in length, and have massive wings with a wingspan of 195 to 250 cm. They weigh 4.9 to 9.5 kg, with females being larger than males.

Lifespan

Their lifespan in the wild is estimated to be about 20 to 30 years.

Distribution

They breed in the Kamchatka Peninsula and along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia. During winter, they migrate to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China. In Japan, they can be seen wintering in Hokkaido, especially on the Shiretoko Peninsula and the Nemuro Peninsula.

The nests are made from branches, leaves, and grass, and are very large and sturdy. Some pairs even continue to use the same nest for generations. Females usually lay 2 to 3 eggs and incubate them for about 38 days. Chicks fledge after about 70 days but continue to be taught hunting techniques by their parents for several more months.
