The Steller's sea eagle is one of the largest eagles in the world. As its name suggests, it's a 'large eagle.'
They have a wingspan of up to 2.5 meters, and their powerful presence makes them truly deserving of the title "giant of the skies." They are winter visitors to Japan, migrating from Russia.

What do Steller's sea eagles eat?
Steller's sea eagles mainly feed on fish. They prefer salmon, trout, and chum salmon, flying near the water's surface to search for fish and swooping down to catch them when spotted.
They sometimes steal fish caught by other birds. In addition to fish, they also eat birds, seals, small mammals, and crabs. In winter, they may scavenge on carrion when food is scarce.

Where do they raise their young?
During the breeding season, Steller's sea eagles return to the Kamchatka Peninsula and the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia, building their nests on cliffs near the coast or in tall trees.
The nests are made from branches, leaves, and grass, and are very large and sturdy. Some pairs even continue to use the same nest for generations. Females usually lay 2 to 3 eggs and incubate them for about 38 days. Chicks fledge after about 70 days but continue to be taught hunting techniques by their parents for several more months.
