Affenpinscher

Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher, not commonly seen in Japan, is a dog with a significant history. With its low-set nose and simian-like facial features, the Affenpinscher has a charm that has garnered a dedicated following domestically. Let's delve into the world of the Affenpinscher!

Affenpinscher Basic Infomation

Country of Origin: Germany

Size: Small

Dimensions: Height: 25-30 cm, Weight: approx. 4-6 kg

The Affenpinscher has a wiry, long coat without sheen, resembling a monkey's face, which is a significant charm point. Its facial hair, resembling a beard, adds to its appeal.

With its short nose and amiable face, its ears are either erect or button-typed, where they stand but are bent at the tips.

The body shape is square-like, with long, slim, and compact legs.

The tail is long and drooping. In countries where tail docking is not banned, there are Affenpinschers with short tails as well, a thought that is quite harrowing.

Believed to have existed since the 17th century, Affenpinschers are deeply historical dogs, with ancestors depicted in Albrecht Dürer's woodcuts.

Initially, they were rat-catching work dogs in Southern Germany, and at that time, they had slightly longer noses and were medium-sized.

However, their endearing faces led them to become pets, and through crossbreeding with Pugs and Brussels Griffons, they evolved into the small, monkey-faced dogs with shorter noses we know today.

They must have been adorable even when they were medium-sized.

Currently, they are bred from the extinct 'Austrian Wirehaired Pinscher', with a mixture of various 'Terriers' and 'Working Terriers'.

Though originating from Germany, they are now less common there, with a larger presence in North America.

Affenpinscher Q&A

Affenpinscher
The history of the Affenpinscher

Affenpinschers have a profound history, believed to have existed since the 17th century, with ancestors depicted in Albrecht Dürer's woodcuts.

Originally, they were rat-catching work dogs in Southern Germany, where they were slightly longer-nosed and medium-sized.

Their charming appearance led to them being kept as pets, and through crossbreeding with Pugs and Brussels Griffons, they became the small, monkey-faced dogs with shorter noses we see today.

They must have been just as adorable when they were medium-sized.

Now, they are bred from the extinct 'Austrian Wirehaired Pinscher', with a mix of various 'Terriers' and 'Working Terriers'.

Originally from Germany, they are now less common there, with a larger population in North America.

Affenpinscher
What is the origin of the Affenpinscher's name?

'Affen' means 'monkey' in German, a fitting name for their appearance.

Also known as 'Monkey Dog' or 'Monkey Terrier', signifying their monkey-like face.

Another nickname, 'Black Devil', likely comes from their all-black appearance. However, 'Affen' and 'Monkey Terrier' are more prevalent, affirming their characteristic simian face.

Affenpinscher
What is the Affenpinscher's personality like?

They are curious and always on the move like hunters, loving to play and engage in mischief.

Fearless, cautious, patient, and devoted, they have a personality that seems protective and cool.

However, they can also be goofy, such as getting stuck in trees due to their energetic nature, which requires constant vigilance from their owners. Despite their seriousness, this aspect is endearingly amusing.

Generally smart and well-behaved, their fearlessness can make them confront perceived threats boldly, potentially acting as guard dogs but also possibly leading to trouble.

How to care for an Affenpinscher?

Considering the adorable yet dignified Affenpinscher as a family member?

As Affenpinschers are rare in Japan, importing them is a primary method, though a few domestic breeders exist, making local adoption possible.

Regarding their care, provide food appropriate for their size, age, and health, similar to other dogs. Comprehensive nutrition food is recommended for its balanced diet.

Homemade food, supplemented with necessary vitamins if lacking in balance, can also be a good option, though pickiness can be a challenge.

While not needing excessive exercise due to their small size, Affenpinschers love to play and are active, so ensure plenty of indoor playtime in addition to short walks.

Special attention is required during walks and playtime to avoid injury, especially in slippery conditions or from high jumps.

Given their dense fur, they are prone to overheating, so manage their temperature carefully during hot weather and ensure they do not suffer from heatstroke indoors.

Being predominantly indoor pets, they don't get very dirty. Bathing once a month is sufficient, but regular wiping, especially around the face, is necessary.

After bathing, ensure they are thoroughly dried with a towel and hairdryer.

Professional trimming is needed monthly due to their unique fur, and daily combing is vital for removing loose hair and maintaining their coat, serving as a bonding and stress-relieving activity.

Their intelligence makes training relatively straightforward, though their short temper may limit the duration and repetition of sessions. Short, focused training periods are recommended.

Their strong vigilance can lead to excessive barking, which might not be suitable for apartment living.

Affenpinscher
What diseases should be cautious of with an Affenpinscher?

Dogs cannot communicate their discomfort, so noticing any unusual behavior is crucial.

Concerning diseases to be aware of include Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, a condition where blood supply to the femoral head is compromised, leading to necrosis.

Patellar Luxation, where the kneecap dislocates, can be due to growth abnormalities or accidents. Managing weight and avoiding strenuous activities can help prevent it.

Cranial Fontanel Retention, where the skull bones don't fully fuse, can lead to serious conditions like hydrocephalus if not monitored closely.

Affenpinscher
How many coat colors are there in Affenpinschers?

Originally, Affenpinschers could have colors like light yellow, reddish, black-gray, dark gray, and gray-white. However, the preferred coat is a double coat of black for both the overcoat and undercoat.

Affenpinscher
What is the lifespan of an Affenpinscher?

The lifespan of an Affenpinscher is typically 12 to 15 years. It's important for them to live happily with their families until the end.
