Oriental Shorthair

Oriental Shorthair

Oriental Shorthair

While round and fluffy cats are lovely, how about a cat with a slender body and stylish look? Introducing the 'Oriental Shorthair'. Its appearance is akin to a model in the cat world! This breed is gradually gaining recognition, but there is still much to discover about it. Let's delve into the various mysteries of the Oriental Shorthair!

Oriental Shorthair Basic Infomation

Country of origin: United Kingdom

Weight: Both males and females weigh between 3-4 kg

The Oriental is a cat breed developed from the Siamese in the post-World War II era of the 1950s. Due to the war's impact, the number of pets, including popular breeds like the Siamese, drastically changed. Breeders began crossbreeding the remaining Siamese cats to increase their numbers.

Partners for crossbreeding included British Shorthair, Abyssinian, and Russian Blue, but the efforts were not very successful until one day, kittens that did not have the typical Siamese color but resembled the Siamese in shape were born.

This led to the categorization of non-pointed colors such as tabby, white, and chocolate, and they were named 'Oriental Shorthair'. These cats are considered the ancestors of today's Oriental Shorthairs. Interestingly, the chocolate-colored cats later became the progenitors of the Havana breed in America.

Occasionally, Oriental Shorthairs can produce kittens with semi-long fur. Initially, these were not recognized as purebreds, but lately, they can be registered as Oriental Longhairs.

Oriental Shorthair Q&A

Oriental Shorthair
What is the origin of the name 'Oriental Shorthair'?

The name 'Oriental Shorthair' is derived from the 'Oriental type' body shape of the Siamese cats, from which this breed was developed.

Oriental Shorthair
What are the color variations of the Oriental Shorthair?

The Oriental Shorthair has a wide range of colors including blue, ebony (black), red, cream, white, chestnut, cinnamon, lavender, and fawn. The patterns can be solid color, tabby, silver & golden, smoke & shaded, parti-color, calico & bicolor, tabby & white, pointed, and pointed & white. Eye colors include blue, green, and odd-eyed. The Oriental Shorthair is primarily a shorthaired breed, though longhaired variants are registered as Oriental Longhairs.

Oriental Shorthair
What does an Oriental Shorthair look like?

The Oriental Shorthair has a long, wedge-shaped head, large almond-shaped eyes, and a small face but with large, pointed ears. The breed is known for its Oriental body type; it has a slender overall structure with thin legs and tail. At first glance, their body appears delicate, but they are surprisingly muscular. The short coat of the shorthaired variety has a satin-like sheen, while the longhaired variety features a smooth, silky texture.

Oriental Shorthair
Are there really over 300 color and pattern variations in Oriental Shorthairs?

Yes, it is true. The Oriental Shorthair boasts more than 300 color and pattern variations. This diversity is likely a result of crossbreeding with various other cat breeds, such as British Shorthairs and others, particularly during efforts to save the breed from extinction.

Oriental Shorthair
How much does it cost to buy an Oriental Shorthair?

Purchasing an Oriental Shorthair from breeders or catteries typically costs between 200,000 to 250,000 yen. It's advisable to visit and view the kittens before making a purchase. While pet shops might offer these cats for 150,000 to 250,000 yen, potentially cheaper than some breeders, be cautious as some shops may breed indiscriminately. Buying from a certified cattery, especially one accredited by cat breeding associations like CFA or TICA, often carries a premium due to the breeder's higher reliability and the added pedigree value.

Can you tell me more about the personality and traits of the Oriental Shorthair?

The Oriental Shorthair is generally sociable and affectionate. They may initially be wary of strangers but often warm up quickly. Known for being particularly clingy with their owners, they seek attention and may climb onto your shoulder or vocalize for interaction while you're busy. Their high activity level and muscular build require regular play, and despite their slender appearance, they are prone to obesity if not exercised properly. They do not do well with long periods of solitude and may not be suitable for homes where they would be left alone frequently. However, they can coexist with children and other pets.
